It’s Not Easy Being Green (if you’re not Irish…)

Travel Talk - World

So last year, you may recall, I wrote a post about St. Patrick’s Day (https://www.johnmeyerbooks.com/horses-and-bulls/).

Well, a reporter recently read it and asked me for a phone interview. She was working on her own article about St. Patrick’s Day and wanted to discuss why I don’t feel the need to celebrate it anymore.

So here’s her article…

http://o.canada.com/news/national/st-patricks/

John Meyer used to be one of those people who left work early on St. Patrick’s Day…”

I can’t really hide here, can I? My full name begins her article. If you only read one paragraph from this article, you’re more than likely to only read that first one… so at least you’ll see my full name. For better or for worse.

The Toronto man now opts out of the annual occasion…”

“The Toronto man.” It sounds like I just committed a crime. Well, I guess I did if you’re a huge St. Patrick’s Day reveler and I didn’t come to your party. (At least the underlined words “opts out” directly links to my blog…)

“…and a new survey released exclusively to Postmedia suggests most Canadians feel similarly.”

Whew! I’m not alone. In fact, I’m part of the (safe) majority.

“Meyer, a travel book author,…”

It was my suggestion. A travel book author who employs fictional drama was too long a description.

“…said that while he loves the Irish…”

I do, I really do! I once spent my birthday in Kilkenny jumping from pub to pub relishing the local Guinness with all the local lads and lasses.

“I’m a grown-up and can drink whenever I want.”

That’s true. I don’t know how that comes across in an online article… but it’s true.

“…whose latest book is Bulls, Bands, and London…”

There it is! That’s all that really matters: a link to my book (…on Amazon)…

I’d rather drink on a random Wednesday than line up in the cold to wear a stupid green hat…”

Or any hat, for that matter.

And I usually don’t drink on random Wednesdays, but I like the fact that I can.

Then there’s the Postmedia survey that strongly suggests that I’m not alone in my withdrawal from the St. Patrick’s Day revelry. Only 31% of Canadians celebrate it and I wish them all well. However, if any of them ever want to walk the pub-lined streets of Kilkenny, I’d gladly join them…on any other day but St. Patrick’s Day.

And just to prove that there are no hard feelings with all things Irish…
